COLONEL RICHARD WILLIAM HART, Hartford, Conn., only son and child of General William Hart, of Saybrook, and his first wife, Esther (Buckingham), born January 15th, 1768, at Hartford; married October 29th, 1795, Elizabeth Bull, of Newport, R. I., born September 17th, 1772. His residence was near the Deaf and Dumb Asylum, some two doors east, with large high pillars in front, and where his daughter, Hetty Buckingham Hart, lived in 1873. He inherited the wealth of his father. He died January 13th, 1837, at Saybrook, aged 68 years, 10 months, and 28 days. His widow. died at Hartford, August 31st, 1843, in her 71st year.

[ Other records state that Richard Hart attained a rank of major and that he was born January 15th, 1768 in Saybrook. He had a large mansion on the corner of Main Street and the Old Boston Post Road in Saybrook. With his uncle Elisha Hart, he ran two stores in Saybrook, one just north of his house.

He was wealthy man and he also owned an eligant home in the well to do Asylum Hills section of Hartford. He usually spent his winters in Hartford, while summering in Saybrook. Major Hart often traveled on the Middlesex Turnpike, a toll road between Saybrook and Hartford, completed in 1807. There is a story that he disliked the delays caused by the stops at the toll booths while traveling between his two homes. On one trip, he is said to have presented a twenty dollar bill to the toll collectors to pay the toll. At the time this was a tremendous amount of money and none of the toll collectors could possibly make change. Major Hart simply kept his money and ordered his coachman to drive on, saving both money and time.

When Major Richard Hart died in 1837, he left an estate worth more than half a million dollars for his wife and daughters. ]
