JOSEPH HART, Saybrook, fourth son of Rev. William Hart, of the same town, and his wife, Mary (Blague), born January 13th, 1755, at Saybrook; married            , Eunice Ellery, of Hartford, Conn., daughter of John, and his wife, Eunice (Hooker). He was engaged in the mercantile business at Hartford, from 1785 to 1800, and probably later, first in company with his brother, General William Hart, and subsequently by himself, and was much engaged in the West India trade. His store was located near the river, and he appears to have been in the wholesale business. He became connected, by marriage and business, with the most noted families in Hartford, but for some cause became embarrassed, left the country, and was lost overboard at sea about 1810.

[ The following note appeared in the Connecticut Courant on December 24th, 1803:

Joseph Hart of the City of Hartford, having committed forgery on the Middletown Bank and absconded, the above reward will be paid by the Middletown Bank to any person or persons for apprehending said Hart and returning him to Hartford and securing him in the gaol in said city, so that he may be brought to justice. He left the city of Hartford on Thursday night the 22d instant. Said Hart is a tall, genteel man, about six feet in height, of light complexion and light eyes, his hair on the top of his head of a light color, rather sandy, usually dressed in powder, steps short and walks very erect, inclining to conversation, and very neat in his dress, which is generally fashionable, but his present apparel cannot be described. He has been in the habit of doing business largely, and is known in Boston, New York and other principal towns between the two places.
      Elijah Hubbard, President
      Middletown, (Con,) Dec. 24, 1803

Joseph Hart had been a good father of seven children, a respected businessman, and a member of Hartford's City Council. His crime and disappearance deeply distressed his family and friends. He was reported to have drowned several months later when he fell overboard while on a ship between St. Martin and St. Thomas in the West Indies. ]
