BRANCH OF THOMAS. 457

born September 2d, 1778, at New Britain. He was a graduate of Williams College, and was a physician in Durham, N. Y., for thirty years. “Then, as a pioneer, he removed to Marshall. He was a scholar, a patron of education, a supporter of the institutions of the gospel, and a man of virtue and worth.” He married April 27th, 1806, Sibil Selden, of Windsor, Conn., and removed from New Britain, Conn., to Durham, N. Y., soon after marriage, and from thence to Marshall, Mich., in July, 1833. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church in Durham. He died at Marshall, September 10th, 1842, aged 64 years. When they removed to Marshall they united with the Congregational Church, and he was elected a deacon, which office he held until his decease. The church was a very feeble one, and he was very active and useful in it. He was in the midst of his activity when taken with his last sickness, and at first expressed great regret that he must leave his work; but it was only a momentary feeling. He almost immediately expressed his perfect resignation to God’s will, saying, “God knows best whether he has any more work for me to do.” He was sick but a few days, and I always look back to them in his sick room as among the most blessed of my life. I remember repeating at the time those beautiful lines—” The chamber where the good man meets his fate is privileged beyond the common walks of virtuous life, quite in the verge of heaven.” His beautiful death was a fit close to such a life.
