Gilbert Hart
Captain Gilbert Hart was born in Wallingford, VT, August 11, 1828. He is the son of Irad and Lucinda
(Wright) Hart. His grandfather was Amasa Hart who was born in Wallingford, CT and went to
Wallingford, VT before the revolution. He was the captain of Company H of the Second Regiment
of United States Sharp-shooter for three years in the war of the Rebellion or the Civil War.
In 1865 he moved to Detroit, MI, where he started a company that made emery wheels and became
quite wealthy. He sponsored the construction of a library in Wallingford, VT, which was created in 1894.
