BRANCH OF STEPHEN. 249

Wilmington, where he still resides in 1874. Mr. Hart is an active and successful business man, owning a foundry and machine-shop, said to be the largest private enterprise of the kind in the state of North Carolina. The firm is known as Hart & Bailey. He also has a vineyard, from which a superior kind of wine is made, called the Scuppernong Champagne. It contains fifty acres, and has 1,000 vines. He is thoroughly practical, and prefers zeal and worth to mere outside display. He is a good father and a respected citizen, and has held positions of honor and trust; one of those of whom we say.—” his word is as good as his bond.” The family is Presbyterian. Mr. Hart was opposed to secession, and was a Unionist in the late war, but was not an extremist. He lost heavily by the war, but has since felt it his duty to practice moderation and forbearance. He has furnished an engraving, by Sartain, to embellish this work, for which he has my thanks. It is on the opposite page.
