Land is our New Middle Name!

Piscataquog Watershed Association becomes

Piscataquog Land Conservancy

The PWA Board of Directors recently voted to change our name to Piscataquog Land Conservancy (PLC).  The name selection followed a lengthy period of testing, reaction gathering, and in-depth conversations with residents throughout the watershed communities. Our new name reflects the evolution of our organization.

Our Roots

In 1969 the Boston and Maine Railroad bed along Route 13 between New Boston and Goffstown was put up for sale. The opportunity to protect this scenic stretch of the Piscataquog River gave birth to the PWA.  As a fledgling organization, PWA focused its attentions on protection of the River and conservation of abutting lands.

Our Evolution

As the years passed, PWA recognized the need to protect our River and its ecosystem more fully by identifying and protecting lands with high conservation values across the 220-square-mile watershed.

Our Future

In 2008 PLC will reach a major milestone.  By year’s end our inventory of protected lands will exceed 4000 acres – land conserved and protected forever through this dedicated organization.  While our name has changed, our mission remains the same – to conserve the natural and scenic environment of Piscataquog River Watershed communities.

Why Piscataquog Land Conservancy?

Over the last year, the PWA Board, staff, a paid consultant, and volunteers have gathered comments and suggestions from members and nonmembers.   Concerns were expressed that our name did not reflect who we are or what we do.  Many people did not understand our mission.  The new name more truly reflects who we are and what we do today:

Piscataquog, because we continue to be a regional organization serving 11 towns who share a common geography shaped by the River.

Land, because protecting land is central to protecting our River and its watershed.

Conservancy, because this word reflects the entire scope of our work today – conserving the natural resources of our watershed.
