Welcome to Nature Notes!

The goal of Nature Notes is to entertain and inform, to invite readers to explore the natural world through the writings of PLC member naturalists Gordon Russell of New Boston, Jamie Bodwell of Nashua and Rosemary Conroy of Weare, as well as a variety of guest writers. Journal entries will be updated monthly so be sure to check back often!

Jamie Bodwell –
Kuncanowet Easement Monitor

Jamie, a New Hampshire native, lives in Nashua with his wife Sherry, daughters Elise and Hailey and six cats! His career in the Land Surveying field has allowed him to explore unique tracts of land both developed and undeveloped.

One of these explorations provided Jamie’s introduction to PLC.  When surveying the Kuncanowet Natural Area in Dunbarton many years ago Jamie fell in love with the property.  He began hiking it every weekend.  On one of those weekend hikes he ran into Margaret Watkins, PLC’s Executive Director.  It wasn’t long before Jamie decided to volunteer for PLC as an Easement Monitor for the Kuncanowet property he so loved.

Today, Jamie continues to support PLC as a volunteer Easement Monitor.  In addition, each year Jamie leads a very popular Winter Tracking exploration of the property.  Jamie has a strong, personal relationship with the Kuncanowet, [link to property page].  We are privileged to have him share his insights here through “Nature Notes”.

Gordon Russell

Gordon is a native of the Piscataquog river watershed. He lives in New Boston in a natural setting provided by beavers. Gordon refers to that location as “the finest place in the world”.  He is an educator, a keeper of journals, an author and story-teller, a tracker and sharer of things wild, a founding member of the PLC and an ardent wanderer throughout the watershed.  His knowledge of the region’s natural features and little known places of special interest, and of its high hills and low mountains, play a major role in his daily work to protect land. To assist all players in the watershed who care about conserving noteworthy places, Gordon and his wife Barbara, created the Russell Piscataquog River Watershed Foundation in 2004.
