BRANCH OF THOMAS. 511

near Marietta, and united with the Congregational Church at Harmar, Ohio, in 1855. Dr. Hart removed from Virginia to Harmar in 1849, where he followed the practice of medicine until 1863, when he removed to Marietta. At the breaking out of the rebellion in 1861 he was active in furnishing the Union soldiers with such medicines as they were likely to need; he also saw to the wants of those families whose fathers had gone to the war. In 1862 he spent much time and money in visiting the battle-fields — all gratuitously. He went to Pittsburgh Landing and Shiloh, Tenn., collected as many of the sick and wounded as the boat would accommodate, (some 300,) brought them to Cincinnati, and returned again for more. Thus he spent some months in visiting Gettysburg, Frederick City, Baltimore, and Washington. He was assistant surgeon in pursuit of the rebel general, Morgan, appointed by Governor Brough, with rank of major. His face is represented on the opposite page. In 1875 he is still following his profession in Marietta. Mrs. Hart is a woman of intelligence, energy, and benevolence, and an artist as well as a good housewife. She is interested in mission and Sunday Schools, and every good work.
