Protecting a New Boston Landmark

In 2005 Ken Colburn contacted PLC about protecting what had become a scenic landmark for those traveling between New Boston and Francestown along Route 136. Colburn Meadow – a roadside marsh resplendent with cattails, red-winged blackbirds and muskrat lodges provides a familiar and much loved view into the natural world. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Kim Burkhamer and Ken Lombard, along with other volunteers, the 12 acre property was soon conserved.

Full of Life

The marsh supports a variety of wildlife as well as offering an everchanging display of wildflowers to its visitors. A forest behind the marsh includes hemlock, white pine, maple, birch, beech and oak trees alongside streams flowing from the hillside. A short education trail is expected to be completed in the near future.
