Tuthill Woodlands Preserve

Walkers enjoy the Gregg Trail at the Tuthill Woodlands Preserve, New Boston

Three Decades of History

In 1960 John & Nora Tuthill purchased 193 undeveloped acres in New Boston. Although intended as an investment, after three decades they came to understand the rich diversity of habitat they were sheltering. After talking
with PLC they decided to permanently protect the land — agreeing to sell it for the same price they’d paid in 1960 — a fraction of the land’s current value.

Neighbors Join Together to Conserve

Working with PLC, neighbors came together to form the Tuthill Woodlands Preservation Group and raised the funds needed to protect the land. PLC then placed a conservation easement on the property, completing its permanent protection.

The Tuthill Woodlands Preserve Today

The Tuthill Woodlands Preserve is home to several different woodland communities, which in turn are host to distinctive wildlife that travel in, through, and beyond they property’s boundaries. Beaver ponds, wetlands, vernal pools, and two brooks can be found here. A walking trail has been developed that is suitable for most ability levels. PLC hosts a variety of educational and recreational outings on the property throughout the year.
