JOHN J. HART, Louisville, Ky., third son of Joseph, of New Britain, Conn., and New Durham, N. Y., and his wife, Lucy (Kirtland), of Saybrook, Conn., born April 8th, 1805, at Durham, N. Y. He printed and published the Louisville Journal- Courier in Louisville. He was never married. He died at Jackson, Mich., on his way to Adrian, May 24th, 1868, aged 63 years, saying “He could trust his mother’s Saviour.”

DOCTOR BENJAMIN KIRTLAND HART, Alton, Ill., fourth son of Joseph, of New Britain, Conn., and New Durham, N. Y., and his wife, Lucy (Kirtland), born July 2d, 1807, at Seneca, Ontario County, N. Y. He was educated at Boston, where he received his diploma, and studied medicine at Henrietta and Middlebury, N. Y. He traveled in the west, and after six months prospecting located at Alton, Ill., then a town only thirteen months old, nailed his tin to the wall, and in July, 1832, wrote to his brother: “I am going to try my luck among the active mass of mankind, and I assure you I shall not give up the ship until disease or age incapacitates me from walking with a firm step on its deck.” He married, November, 1839, Sophia E. Mix, of New Orleans. He was a skillful physician and surgeon, and accumulated a handsome property. He was very benevolent, having educated many young men and women to fill useful places in society. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and the right hand man of his pastor. After some thirty years practice, his health beginning to fail him, he started for the seaside with his family, and got as far as his sister’s, at Adrian, where he died, August 30th, 1864, aged 57 years. A sermon was preached at his funeral entitled “The Beloved Physician,” from the text—” For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” His widow was living in 1871, at Alton, Ill.
