2167.                         Pennfield, Ohio.

HENRY I. HART, Pennfield, Lorain County, Ohio, second son of Edward Hart, of Durham, Conn., and Pennfield, Ohio, and his wife, Emma L. (Merriman), born September 26th, 1838, at Pennfield. He served two years in the late war, first as color-bearer of a regiment of Ohio Volunteers, and served six months as sergeant-major in a pioneer corps. He was finally honorably discharged on account of illness, and died at Pennfield, November 10th, 1863, aged 25 years. He was a Christian hero, being a member of the Congregational Church. The following shows his appointment:

"NEW MARKET, VA., May 14th, 1862.

I hereby certify that I have this day appointed Corporal Henry I. Hart, Company I, Eighth Regiment Ohio Volunteers, sergeant-major of the Pioneer Corps, in accordance with an order from Major-General Banks.

Captain and Chief of Pioneers, Shields’ Division."

Here follows the recommendation for his promotion:

"WASHINGTON, D. C., September 24th, 1862.

This is to certify that H. I. Hart has faithfully and ably performed the duties of sergeant-major in the corps under my command, since April 25th, 1862. He posseses a thorough knowledge of the business of a military company, and is withal a brave and well drilled officer. Above all he has ever maintained a character above reproach, and has proved that a man may be a soldier and not yield to temptation. He would fill a position of a commissioned officer with credit to himself, satisfaction to the army, and honor to the country.                               E. B. OLMSTED,

JANE HART, Durham, Conn., eldest daughter of Samuel Hart, of the same town, and his wife, Lydia R. (Davidson), born March 22d, 1841, at Durham; married January 1st, 1863, William Hale, of Wallingford, where they went to live. They had—1, Edgar, born in 1865; Frances, born in 1867, and died          ; 3, Infant, born August 12th, 1870.

Gladden, son of Samuel, of New Britain, and his wife, Phebe (Pennfield), baptized May 10th, 1812.
