SAMUEL HART, Durham Conn. fifth son of Hawkins Hart of Wallingford, and his second wife, Mary (Street), born July 18th, 1735, at Wallingford; married October 9th, 1759, at Durham, Abridget Fowler. He took the oath of fidelity in Durham, August 27th, 1777, and was made a freeman, September l6th, 1777. He was admitted to the church there in half-way covenant, August 8th, 1762, and at the same time had his eldest child baptized. He and his wife were admitted. to the church in full communion, August 18th, 1771. He held the military rank of lieutenant in the army of the revolution, and was wounded at the battle of Saratoga, after which he drew a pension. He settled in Durham, on a farm given to his grandfather, Rev. Joseph Elliot, by the legislature, for preaching an election sermon. When asked if he was one that Arnold drove up, with the flat of his sword, to action, he replied, "No! I was so near the enemy that Arnold dare not come." He died January 12th, 1805, aged 71 years. She died November 6th, 1827, aged 93 years.
