[ The pictures here are of Lorenzo D. Hart and his second wife, Eliza Jane Douglas Wood Hart. They were married on 6/17/1886, on which date he was 57 years old and she was 45 years old. They did not have any children together. Lorenzo's first wife Clarissa Stearns died 12/26/1884. Lorenzo and Eliza lived together in Belvidere, IL until he died 12/11/1908. Clarissa's obituary, as reported in an unknown local newspaper is provided below. Her obituary talks of children in the plural but Lorenzo's will only makes mention of Gertie Ann and not of William.

In Lorenzo's will, his adopted daughter Gertie Ann Douglas is listed, so it is safe to guess that she married a Douglas. When Lorenzo and Eliza were married on 6/17/1886 Gertie Ann Hart was listed as a witness, so she must have been married after that date. Eliza Jane's maiden name is Douglas and her father, Wheeler LeGrande Douglas, is the 2nd cousin of the "Little Giant" Stephen Douglas. Could Gertie Ann have married a member of her step mother's Douglas family. Gertie Ann had an adopted brother by the name of William A. Hart, born 8/5/1870. He is not listed in the will dated 1/8/1907, so he was probably desceased by then.

The following is the Obituary for Clarissa Stearns Hart from an unknown newspaper:

HART.—Clarissa Stearns was born in Shalersville, Ohio, April 13, 1830, and married there to Lorenzo D. Hart, Oct. 18, 1858; came to Illinois Oct. 28, 1858; converted in February, 1867, and joined the United Brethren in Christ; died Dec. 26, 1884. Preaching being discontinued near her home in Harlem, she attended the M. E. church in Freeport, and aided and rejoiced in their prosperity. Her house was always a home for all ministers of the gospel. Though suffering from internal cancer she yet lived a happy life of trust in God. Talking of heaven and praising God many months, she anxiously waited for heaven's chariot, and embraced husband and children, and kissing them good-bye, stepped in with the angels and went home to glory.—J. Wardle.

The following is the Obituary for Lorenzo D.Hart from the Belvidere Daily Republican.

LORENZO HART IS KILLED
BY FALL ON WALK

AGED MAN DIED AT DEKALB LAST NIGHT AS THE RESULT OF A FALL WHICH CAUSED CONCUSSION OF THE BRAIN - DEATH A GREAT SHOCK TO RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

Lorenzo D. Hart, of Belvidere, eighty years of age, died at DeKalb last night as a result of a fall which caused concussion of the brain.

Mr. Hart had been at DeKalb a part of the time of late receiving treatment at an institution there for a malady. He was considered to be cured and was to have returned home permanently today. He had been home occasionally and the members of the family were looking expectantly for his home coming today.

Last evening he left the house at DeKalb and not returning search was made and he was found prostrate on the sidewalk, having evidently fallen and struck the sidewalk with his head.

Coroner Morris held an inquest, the jury finding that Mr. Hart came to his death from concussion of the brain caused by the fall.

The deceased had been troubled for some time with a weak heart and an attack, coming with little warning, is believed to have caused the fall. He went to DeKalb the fore part of the week to continue treatment. A letter received from him by the family yesterday stated that he was feeling remarkably well and would return home this forenoon. The telegram received later was therefore a great shock to the relatives.

I. A. Holcomb left this forenoon on the 10:30 train for deKalb and will bring the remains home at once.

The deceased was 80 years of age October 21st last. His former home was in Freeport, where he lived for forty years. Since coming to Belvidere he has passed a quite, retired life at the family home, 226 East Hurlburt avenue.

His wife survives, as also of the immediate family Mrs. I. A. Holcomb, who is a step-daugher. A brother, Charles Hart, still makes his home in Freeport, and was expected here today.

The deceased had many friends who held him in high esteem. They with all the friends of the family will greatly deplore his loss and have much sympathy with those so suddenly bereft.
