appointed tutor in college in 1832, and adjunct professor of ancient languages in 1836. He was licensed as a probationer for the gospel ministry in 1836, but subsequently returned his license to the presbytery, by whom it was cancelled, he having determined to devote his life to the profession of teaching. In the fall of 1836 he became the proprietor of the Edge Hill Boarding School, near Princeton, which institution he conducted until December, 1841. In September, 1842, he was appointed principal of the Central High School of Philadelphia. He was brought into the church at the early age of fourteen, mainly through the influence of his mother and Sabbath School teacher. He married April 21st, 1836, Amelia C. Norford, of Princeton. He was for a time principal of the State Normal School of New Jersey, but resigned February 7th, 1871. Thus Professor Hart, from the peculiar structure of his mind and taste, became one of the greatest educators of the age. From his constant contact with children and youth he could adapt his labors and writings to their wants and necessities.
