church, and died Jan. 27th, 1770, aged 84 years. Elizabeth, his widow, died Nov. 14th, 1777. He is said to be one of the early settlers of "Great Swamp Society." In 1753, April 27th, he headed a petition to the General Assembly for a division of this society, and the result was a new society, called New Britain in 1754, now, 1874, the town and city of New Britain. SARAH HART, Farmington, eldest daughter of Capt. John and his wife Mary (Moore), born , 1687, at Farmington, baptized there Sept. 11th, 1687, married Feb. 15th, 1705, Ebenezer Steele, son of Samuel and his wife Mary Boosey, born August 13th, 1661, in Farmington. They resided there and he inherited his father's large estate, and was a prominent man in the "Litchfield Land Survey." In his will he forbade his widow to marry Gersham Lewis, a dissipated physician. She turned David Steele, his nephew, and heir to his property, out of the house. Their children were, 1, Mary, born June 15th, 1706, married Jan. 24th, 1725, Thomas Smith of Farmington; she died Jan. 4th, 1789; 2, Sarah, born May 25th, 1708, probably died young. MATTHEW HART, Kensington, third son of Capt. John and his wife Mary (Moore), born , 1690, in Farmington, and baptized there Dec. 7th, 1690, married, Jan. 10th, 1725-6, Sarah Hooker, daughter of John, born Sept. 11th, 1702, at Farmington. He died at Kensington, Oct. 30th, 1736, aged 48 years; a tombstone shows where he was buried in "Christian Lane Cemetery." She married, second, Huit Strong.
