New WVMS Members

Please welcome to the club the following new members:

Fred & Clara Sherman of Dallas; Ralph Suverly of Willamina; Don & Hedi Remine of Salem and W. C. Lundine of Dallas. Welcome!

If I've forgotten to include you as a new member (or did include you as a new member when your not), please let me know at the next meeting.

Meeting Location

Meetings are at 7:30 p.m. the first Monday of the month, October through December and February through June. We meet at:

Jason Lee Methodist Church
820 Jefferson Street NE
Salem

Meetings are held in the Kirby Room on the first floor. Parking is at the back entrance of the church, on the corner of Winter Street and Norway. There is a ramp available at this entrance for persons unable to use the stairs.

Current And Future Meetings

If you missed the December 7th meeting, you really missed a fascinating one. Dr. Andrew Moldenke, who is a professor of entomology (a bug doctor) at Oregon State University, was the speaker. I'll never view "ordinary" dirt in the same way again!

As mentioned in the president's message, the February meeting will be a potluck, and you should have been contacted by phone. If not, just bring the special dish (or in my case, not so special dish) of your choice, along with any utensils, plates and cups that you may need.

The program for the February meeting will be a round table discussion (or as Katsu put it, a square table discussion) on the foraging regulations that are currently in effect, or are being proposed for the various State and National forest lands that we may be picking on. Genie will be putting together some ideas for a boiler plate letter that we can all use, adding our own embellishments as desired. It was felt that there would be much more impact if we each gave our individual thoughts as opposed to having the group send one letter. Judy Rogers of the Oregon Mycological Society will try to show up with some notes and extra information gathered by some of the members of the Portland group.

Speaking of Judy, the program in April will feature Judy Rogers of the Oregon Mycological Society discussing an interesting project which several members of their club had started. This is basically a plot of land in the Mt. Hood National forest (I believe) that has been sectioned off, studying the effects of cutting versus picking of Chanterelles. This is a simplification of the project (which had started many years ago), and she will be updating us on what they've found thus far.

The March meeting will feature a speaker we all know and love -- Evelyn Moreland. She says that it will be a surprise topic, so be sure to show up because since it's a surprise I probably won't discuss it in the next puffball -- you'll have to be there!
