the Puffball, Volume 15, Number 4

Puffball New Format

As you've probably noticed the Puffball has taken on a new look this month. The first order of business though is to give a personal heart felt "Thank You!" to Daisy Hernandez for her tackling the Puffball as the editor for the past two years or so.

Now, back to the new format. Since this is the first issue using this format, I would really appreciate any feedback concerning issues such as readability, placement of articles, and anything else that anyone would like to add (except for feedback on my grammar -- which I already know is bad!)

I intend to include several new sections in the Puffball, including the following ideas:

1) What's New in the World of Mushrooms
Feature that peruses the current mycological literature and summarizes the primary articles. Would also give subscription information for each of these publications.

2) What's Old in the World of Mushrooms
Feature that shows what was in the literature at some time frame in the past. This will be an infrequent addition depending on what I run into of interest in musty old libraries.

3) Who's Who in the Club (Literature)
A feature that gives a short biography of members in the club. This section would also include other individuals outside the club that may be of interest to club members (such as guest speakers, authors of some of the books we use, etc.).

4) Mushroom Talk
A feature that discusses mushrooms that the editor has either found during the current month, or mushrooms that can be expected to be found during the issue date of the newsletter. I intend this to be more of an informal chat with the discussion centering around the wheres, whens, hows, and whys of the featured mushrooms.

As always, original, signed articles or contributions from other members are always welcome. If you have an interest in any facet of mushroom study that you would like to share with other members of the club, please contact the editor by the 10th of the month before the next issue date (this would be the 10th of January for the February/March newsletter). Some ideas would include: your favorite mushroom recipes, cultivation tips, mushroom collectibles (stamps, nicknacks), or anything to do with mushrooms (maybe juggling mushrooms; doing magic tricks such as pulling mushrooms out of your hat).

Finally, the fine print:

"Views expressed in signed articles are the author's. Unsigned articles are by the editor. While great care is taken to check accuracy, WVMS and the editor are not responsible for personal actions based on published material".

Thank you to Daisy Hernandez, the previous editor, for wording the disclaimer so well.
